Pet groomers answer please!?

Grooming salon vs mobile service as a career?
what are the benefits of both? what exactly does the mobile groomers do? Do they just set up anywhere on the side of the road? do people call them? do they groom the pet inside or outside the van?

I’m not a groomer but I prefer our local mobile groomer. I know her rig was a pretty big expense – it is one of the more modern truck-type units. She needs an an electrical outlet to plug into for some services (like her dryers), but the rig has its own water tanks. My dogs are far less stressed by not being crated in a strange place while waiting to be groomed and picked up (even though they are crate trained). My one dog lies down on a bed in the rig while the other is groomed because she doesn’t like being separated from her buddy. I also don’t need to be here which is very convenient. She can come while I’m at work, get my dogs, groom them and leave me a bill. We do this monthly and it works great. She charges maybe 10% more but it’s worth it.

Everything is set up inside her truck and ready to go at each stop. She just plugs in. I’ve seen the inside and it’s pretty impressive. The rig was an expense but she pays no rent either. She got a loan to buy it. She advertises in the local paper and phone book and truck advertises itself. She has a good reputation and a devoted clientele which also helps advertise her business. She has an answering machine and she returns calls for appointments in the evening. Her hours are her own since she has no shop hours – she just makes appointments. But I do believe she is very busy.

Our humane society had a dog event last week and she came as a sponsor and offered free toenail clips. It was on a ranch and one dog managed to find and roll in a cow pie. Without a power or water hookup, she was able to shower the dog down (after we doused him with a couple buckets first so we wouldn’t mess up the rig too much), so some services can be done without the power or water hookups.
