I have a Dog grooming question?
I live in AZ where it gets really hot, if I got a Australian Shepherd Or A Border Collie would I be able to get its hair cut shorter (still keeping the same ‘look’ just with shorter fur?) I don’t want them to get hot.
Not that I plan to let them go outside but its hot even INSIDE the house with AC!
Generally if they have access to water, and regular grooming to keep there hair in good shape you will not have to shave or cut them. Its not needed. They just cant be in high temps for extended periods of time or exercised hard during the hottest part of the day. If you have the AC on and its below 70 degrees usually, it wont hurt the dog. If he is in any kind of discomfort you can shave him down with no problem, but I think that defeats having a long haired dog. I would go with a smooth coated breed in that case. Saves money on grooming.
TOO ADD longer haired dogs will keep the long gaurd hairs but get rid of the undercoat. This is the MOST important thing is to be sure ALL that undercoat is gone and cleaned out regularly. To keep the dog from overheating too much but the real thing is to just be careful in the heat. DONT put them in a situation they will overheat. Exercise at night, or early morning, be sure they have access to a cool environment and TONS of water!!! Your dogs will be fine
PEPPER – shaving a Border collie or Aussie will not harm the dog. They have double coats and if they are not being shown the coats will grow back. However its NOT needed but it will NOT hurt the dog in any way to do so…
