Do I have to shave my samoyed dog in Florida if he is rarely out and is kept in shade and has ample water?

The dog seemed to have had metabolism problems when he was shaved once and we never walk him in hot midday sun. We keep him in his normal coat because he is a pet therapy dog and looks beautiful and is well groomed all the time. Some people claim we are being cruel to him and claim he is too hot.

There are countless Samoyed breeders/exhibitors who live in Florida (and other hot climates) and I can guarantee you they do NOT SHAVE their dogs.

I showed a Samoyed in agility in full coat in Arizona in 90+ degree heat. She did better with the heat than most of the Labs, Border Collies and Golden Retrievers.

A Samoyed’s coat acts as insulation— both keeping a dog warm in the winter by keeping the heat in .. and cool in the summer by keeping the heat out.

If you keep your Sam groomed and not matted it should do just fine!

One thing the questioner needs to remember is that a Samoyed is white, that white is reflective (especially if you have a Samoyed with that beautiful near crystalline sparkle through the top coat). Shaving a Samoyed removes the ability of the coat to both reflect light and heat. Often, a Samoyed will blow most of its undercoat as the weather grows hotter. In a properly coated Samoyed, this creates a layer of air under the reflective topcoat keeping the dog cooler- (think of this in terms of the difference in temperature of parking your car in the sun for 10 minutes or parking it in the shade).
