Do you have experience in training a horse to accept Clippers?

I have a 9 year old Quarter Horse, who never has trained with scissors. He afraid of them and I've been working with him gradually get used to noise, but has not allowed him to touch them. Has anyone had experience in training his horse, cutting machines? If so 1. How long does it take? 2. What type of horse and how old was he? 3. What do you use? 4. How often have to work with your horse? (Did you work every day, twice a week?) Any leads or information about getting a Clippers horse to accept would be appreciated Thanks

I have taught many horses of different ages in this way-it takes time, repetition, consistency and patience, like all things horses! As an aside, buy the wireless cutting machines for the training part, its much less stressful not having to worry the cable from getting tangled in the legs and face. You want the horse to be used for the Clippers (both noise and vibration), even before trying to clip them, or you will end up with a horse that seems to have lost a fight with the lawnmower. A calm horse is much easier for the boyfriend of one who is jumping and shaking and sliding around! First, I will return with the Clippers and put in the bucket or in feed or hay rack, with the guard, obviously. This sensitivity suffer to the noises near his face, as they have to get up close to her to eat. Once they are completely unrelated to noise (may take a day or two), the next step is the hardest-get used to the vibration. I shall refer to the Clippers on, with a horse in a stall, halter and the main line. I do not suggest try to desensitize a horse at all, tied or in the bonds. Then show them the Clippers, they smell, if you like, etc. When calm, begin by touching on the shoulder. I just set the Clippers a bit there, waiting to stop twitching, jumping, whatever, then start to stroke the area with the Clippers. Usually wait between steps until the horse is calm, relaxed head, licking and chewing, etc., before going, so keep in mind. repeat the steps in the back, legs, neck, face and finally the ears (in increasing order of difficulty in most horses). Because the nose is very sensitive, you may have trouble getting the horse to relax thence with the Clippers, so settle for standing calmly before going in that case. Some horses are very nervous, as it is better if you start by touching them with the Clippers, while they are out of first. Some do not really care and can only do this quickly a few times before you can start the real cut. It really depends the horse of how long it will take. The most important thing is that you get them calm and relaxed in each stage, and ends the session on a positive note, with the horse doing something good (licking and chewing, head relaxed, or standing while playing with the Clippers). I make these things often every day during the first week or so, whereas the horse is eating dinner grain or hay. Then when you get bored, can be reduced to once every other day or every third, then once a month, only a quick review before an adjustment. Then you'll see that they are fine when you just bust out of the Clippers and the right to go to it.
